Water Jet Sweden (WJS) is about to build and supply what is believed to be the world's largest water jet profiler to a ThyssenKrupp Group shipyard in Sweden.

Currently being completed at the company's much-extended Ronneby plant, the new profiler will be able to process thick steel sheet of up to 6 by 15 m.

Having a table area of 90 m², this WJS NC 60150 D BEV model, exceeds the previous largest machine made by WJS in Sweden. That was a triple-head 4 by 18 m (72 m²) profiler that was supplied last year to Dillinger Hütte, in the Saar region of Germany, for cutting heavy, hardened steel plates of up to 300 mm thickness for the offshore oil and gas industries.

WJS are able to offer accuracies within 0.1 to 0.2 mm across the entire work area in spite of the large size of these machines, due to a well-proven absolute measuring system in combination with a bridge-type construction,

Fanuc's latest 31i CNC is employed with high-speed linear motors on both X and Y axes to ensure rapid positioning of the abrasive, high-pressure jets, which greatly enhance operating efficiency.

The profiler also incorporates the latest optional full, five-axis movement for cutting heads known as 'Bevel Jet'. With this option, ThyssenKrupp has acquired a massive profiler with the ability to provide clean, smooth and accurate, bevelled edges that make for stronger welded joints. Not only can the head be swivelled to any desired angle for both longitudinal and transverse straight edges, it can also maintain bevels through an entire profile. This is achieved by the CNC system's ability to interpolate data with the specially-prepared Taper Angle Control (TAC) function.
