Iron caster Daedong Metals Co. Ltd., Daegu, South Korea, is installing a compacted graphite iron (CGI) process control system it expects to have in production sometime this month.
The company has contracted with SinterCast, Stockholm, Sweden, to provide the technology necessary to produce CGI. A purpose-built version of the supplier’s process control system will provide liquid metal analysis capability and operator feedback results at two different locations in the metalcasting facility.
Daedong will run series production of three different CGI cylinder heads for commercial vehicle engines ranging from 6-L to 11-L displacement. The heads will be used for the high performance versions of the existing engines and are forecast to provide a production volume of approximately 50,000 engine equivalents in 2011.
“The CGI heads are specifically used for the high power versions of the engines and, as the sector continues to move toward higher power density, the CGI volume is expected to increase,” said Steve Dawson, president and chief executive officer of SinterCast.
Daedong is an independent ferrous metalcaster producing components primarily for passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and construction equipment. The company has a production capacity of 40,000 metric tons per year and supplies castings to customers such as Daedong Industries, Doosan Infracore, Doosan Mottrol, GM Daewoo, Hyundai and Kia Motors, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Kubota and Volvo.
